The
Great American Paper Chase
Abitibi’s Recycling Division
recently held a two-month accumulated paper collection contest
called “The Great American Paper Chase.” Participants were
placed into 4 categories: Public Schools, Private Schools,
Places of Worship, and All Others. Each category had a 1st,
2nd, and 3rd place winner.

Estimates 115 Million Tons/Year of Demolition Waste Generated in
U.S.
Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) has
recently completed a detailed evaluation of the amount of
demolition material generated annually by the “traditional”
demolition industry in the United States. The evaluation
concluded that over 115 million tons per year (2004 data point)
of demolition material are handled across the United States
through traditional demolition services and that the industry
reuses/recycles an estimated 73% of that overall material.

Steel Recycling in the U.S. Continues its Record Pace in 2005
The Steel Recycling Institute
(SRI) announced that the recycling rate for the world’s and
America’s most recycled material – steel – increased to 75.7
percent in the United States in 2005. This reflects a
five-percentage point increase in the recycling rate and the
highest rate ever recorded in the United States.
