The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington brought inspiration to life at the 11th Annual THINGAMAJIG Invention Convention. On August 4, 2005, nearly 3,000 children of all ages showed off their unique designs and inventions to the community at the Show Place Arena & Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro.

Designed to engage children in science, technology, and the arts, THINGAMAJIG offered young people from Maryland, DC, and Virginia the opportunity to showcase their talent by designing an original creation using recycled materials, basic scientific skills, and their imaginations. Children competed individually and in small groups in various categories such as Funky Fashions, Game Play, Rockin’ Robots, and Kids Space (where child size furniture was created).

Several Recycling Coordinators and professionals from the area served as judges for the event. Marilyn Rybak from the Prince George’s County Recycling Office said she was truly amazed at the creativity the children exhibited and was pleased with the awareness of the importance of recycling among the young people: “The YMCA is credited with doing an excellent job in teaching our

youth about recycling and encouraging the children to be imaginative and inventive.”

Denice Curry, also from the Prince George’s County Recycling Office, judged books authored by some of the THINGAMAJIG participants. Denise was especially touched by a story written by a youth who told of a story of how trash and other pollutants were hurting the Maryland Blue Crabs. The story encouraged children and adults to recycle unwanted items, instead of throwing trash onto the ground where it may end up in the Chesapeake Bay.
